My Friends on the Inside

By Kemi Tijani

RAISE KIDS WHO MAKE GOOD FOOD CHOICES

Alan doesn’t like what mum has served for lunch. He would rather have ice-cream, pizza, and cake. But lo and behold, the next morning he has a totally new attitude towards eating! What changed overnight?

Read the book to find out how Alan understands what his friends on the inside need to be strong and happy. A wonderful story about how every part of our body does a job for us, how every organ on the inside functions and what it needs from us to work in the right way.

Ideal for kids aged four to nine, this book helps children get a visual on not only how the human biology works but also the food pyramid and the whys behind the foods we should be eating vs the foods we should have sometimes, as a treat.

This wonderfully illustrated book would make a great addition to any home, classroom, cafeteria, or library. The conversations around eating healthy and developing good habits are critical at a young age.

Engaging storytelling is a resourceful way to bring home topics like how eating right affects our movement, dangers of sugar, how diet affects our bones and more…

Reviews

“Children benefit from a diet that contains different types of food from each of the major food groups. My friends on the inside playfully illustrates a simple but key message for young children – that their “friends on the inside” will thank them for including variety and balanced in their diet”.

Jacqueline Lyons PHD

I am a home school mum of 2 and a grandmother of 2 boys. I know the challenges of getting your children to eat right. After reading My Friends on the Inside,
I would highly recommend it as a fun, informative way to teach children about healthy eating habits.

La Dona McAlister

This beautiful tale is a nutritional parable. Both entertaining and informative, it illustrates why healthy eating is important to the developing child.

Ryan Morgan Dr

“Healthy eating is such an important topic for children. This book brings it right down to the children’s level so that they
can understand how eating a healthy diet can contribute to how efficiently our brain works and how much energy we have for doing the things that we love.”

Ms. Griffin, Ms. Thompson

"It’s a pleasure to be able to recommend this fantastic children’s book called “My Friends on the Inside” by a friend & local author Kemi Tijani in Cohb. It’s all about healthy from a child’s perspective. Its beautiful illustration with amazing colours captured the children’s imagination. Today as we read it after they decided to put words into actions from now on will be offering more fresh fruit as another healthy choice at arts & crafts workshops. Congratulations Kimi on a fantastic book. You’re a truly gifted inspirational to all parents and young children."

Author’s Note

This book was inspired by my daughter, who was six years old and struggled with eating her vegetables. When I talked to her about it, I knew I had to tell her the importance of eating healthy food that includes fruits and vegetables. I needed to explain in a simple way that would be relevant to her. But at the same time, she would find it exciting and easy to understand.

The story of Alan came to my mind, and her face lit up as I tell the story. She was encouraged, how Alan promised to send the best food to his friends on the inside to allow him to grow up to be a healthy boy.

This story inspires my daughter to make her own decisions about food choices. As we both remind each other, we may not like the taste, but for the sake of our friends on the inside, that depends on us; we simply got to do it.
A few weeks later, I shared the same story with my friend LaDona who said, ” That’s simply brilliant; you need to put that message in a book.” From then on, that idea never left my mind. I just needed time to write it.
Many months later, I started writing the book during the Corona Virus Lockdown in 2020.

I hope you and your family find it helpful, and I hope it inspires your kids as much as it has inspired my daughter to make a better choice with foods.
